His Name Shall Be Called …” Is a choral reading for nine people. It follows three wise men as they seek the King of the Jews. As important as their journey is to find the child so is their quest to discover the name of the Christ. Their search takes them by figures in history that have also called out for the name of the Lord.

Costuming can be elaborate for the wise men, but I would do it with simple suggestive pieces. Maybe just head pieces. The six others would be in neutral dress as they play many characters/parts.

The wise men need simple props. Something to represent the gifts – gold, frankincense and myrrh. When they finally present them to the child they set them down stage center as if the child is sitting in His mother’s lap in front of them. It will be important that they focus on the correct spot to establish a reality for the audience. They will in turn – set the gold in front, anoint the head of Jesus with oil and light the incense. This is a representation of the anointing oil, the Altar of Incense and the incense itself in the tabernacle. Just as the mercy seat was anointed and the incense burnt before it, so do the wise men anoint Jesus and burn the incense in His presence.

Many may find this an obscure reference. Hopefully, the scripture and the actions will be clear and the meaning found.

Of the nine people three are the ‘wise men’. The others are split into teams of two.
